According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), roughly 2,000 children are reported missing daily. Even though the vast majority of these cases end with the child found safe, the sheer number is still shocking. The essence of teaching kids of the basic safety skills without necessarily instilling fear in them is on the rise.  Many parents fear that their children will live in fear and lack trust due to such happenings.  It is the goal of every guardian to make sure that the safety of their kids is not compromised. So how can we keep our kids safe in today’s modern world? No tool or device will keep them safe 100 percent of the time, but here are some tips you can follow to mitigate the risks.

1. Let The Kids Know A Guardian’s Phone Number

Every guardian should ensure that their kids memorize both the parent’s names and their respective phone numbers. This is helpful especially in case a kid is lost and needs assistance in locating his/her parent.  kids should learn that when they start talking so that it will be easy to memorize without any difficulties.

2. Scream And Run

If a child is scared of someone, it is always good for him to understand that it’s Ok to scream and run.  This will save him/her from any awful thing that can follow in case of anything. It will also alert the people around and come to rescue before something happens.

3. “OK” And “Not Ok” Secrets

Many kids have been taught that secrets should always be kept safe. Your kids should be in a position to differentiate between the “OK” and “Not OK” to keep secret.  This is because many adults tell kids to keep any harassment secret when it is not ok, or when they are hurting them without their knowledge.  They tend to take advantage of their innocence and often tell the kids to keep such secrets from their parents.

4. Children Home Alone

When children are alone in the house, and the phone rings or someone knocks on the door, let them know that they should not let any anyone know that they are at home alone.  Adults can easily take advantage of the fact that a kid is at home alone to have the privacy needed to hurt them.

5. Online Access

Parents or adults should never allow their children to get online alone. This is because,  due to their innocence, they might end up hooking up with bad people or give out information to dangerous people. A Kid should never talk to people online without permission. Parents should always guide them through the internet and at the same time teach them online safety tips.

6. Family Talk

Take time to talk to your children about safety and abduction prevention. Having conversations with your kids about lessons and safety tips, while at the same time narrating to them incidences of recent happenings can help a lot.
