Depending on your needs, goals, and aspirations, choosing the right laptop can be tricky. Given the wide range of brands and choices in the market, people get sometimes confused and end up buying the one that doesn’t fully meet their expectations.  Whether you are a businessman, a student, an entrepreneur, a corporate or an individual, if you are planning to buy a new laptop, then this is for you. In this laptop buying guide, you’ll find the most important features to consider to make sure that your new laptop does properly what you want.

1. Major Operating Systems You Should Know

Let’s make it simple. An operation system (OS) is the part of a computer that manages all the applications (software and hardware).  Therefore it determines the type of applications you can run on your laptop. The three (3) latest major Operating systems (OS) are:

  • Window 10 created by Microsoft
  • Chrome OS developed by Google
  • OS X designed by APPLE

Depending on your objectives, these three operating systems (OS) provide different features. If you want the traditional operating system environment (gaming, productivity software, enterprise computing, etc), then windows 10 is the best for you. However, if you’re doing everything on the web and search engines, then it’s likely Chrome OS that would fit your needs. If you’re editing video and creating graphics, (mostly apps) your best bet is likely OS X.

Without it, the operating system and all applications cannot work. Anytime the laptop needs to access data, the CPU executes that task. Better CPUs will be able to process more data at quicker speeds. So make sure that the processor is powerful enough for your needs. Most laptops come with one of these 2 types of processors: Intel® or AMD processor. Find the differences below:

3. Pick Your RAM Wisely

The technology world is moving faster nowadays. So make sure your machine runs faster as well. The element that determines the speed of the laptop is the memory.  The technical of name is RAM. More RAM means better speed. A big amount of RAM will allow you to open up more programs simultaneously in lesser time. 4 GB RAM is ok. However, for higher performance, 8GB RAM and above should be fine. Below is the recommended amount of RAM for different activities.

  • Minimum 4GB: Browsing the web, updating social media, watching video clips
  • Between 6GB and 8GB: Researching & writing essays, creating spreadsheets, working on presentation and other office work
  • Between 8GB and 16GB: Streaming HD Film, Editing photo and video as a hobby, music production.
  • more than 64GB: professional graphic design, professional editing photos, and videos, CAD etc.

4. Get The Most Convenient Laptop Screen Size

Yes, the screen size matters in the laptop buying guide. There is a wide range of screen size available. From 10” to 17″ and more. For instance, a laptop with a 10,6” screen is quite small and maybe easy to carry around. But not suitable if you spend a lot of time typing or reading documents. On the other hand, a 17″ laptop screen size is great for multimedia and offers a great visibility of the content. But it can be less convenient to carry around. So for a good combination of easier portability and good visual, a 14” screen is ideal for your laptop. Also, 15.6” laptop screen sizes are the most common people go for. There are very convenient if you’re spending more time working at a desk than moving around.

5. Pick The Right Screen Resolution

The screen resolution is very important to consider especially when you are planning to spend a lot of time on your laptop. If you want a sharper content displayed on your screen then go for higher resolutions, such as 1600 x 1200 pixels, 1920×1080 pixels or 1080p ( Full HD), 4K screens. They are ideal for watching movies and gaming. In general, the larger the screen, the higher the resolution it can support. A lower resolution screen doesn’t show the detail needed for high-end media work. So if you need your laptop for graphic design or media editing, a Full HD screen or better is a necessity.

6. Storage Capacity That You Need

Knowing the storage capacity you need for your new laptop is crucial. All Programs, files, and data are kept in the storage. The main difference between the storage capacity and the memory of a laptop is that the storage capacity typically refers to the internal hard drive capacity. Memory refers to the RAM capacity of a machine and essentially defines how responsive a laptop is. So when it comes to laptop storage capacity most of them range from 160 GB up to over 2 TB. Some systems will have between 500 GB and 1 TB of storage, which is more than enough for the standard laptop system.

Keeping this laptop buying guide in mind will help narrow down your options.
